How to Detangle Curly Hair With a Wide Tooth Comb Without Breakage

Technique matters as much as the tool here. Here's the process that actually protects curl pattern while detangling.

Step 1: Detangle in the shower, with conditioner still in. Conditioner provides the slip that lets a wide-tooth comb glide rather than catch. Detangling dry, or after conditioner has rinsed out, is the single biggest cause of unnecessary breakage on curly hair.

Step 2: Start from the ends, never the roots. Work through knots at the very bottom of a section first, then move upward once that section is tangle-free. Starting at the root and working down pushes all the accumulated tangles into one knotted mass at the ends.

Step 3: Section hair before combing. Divide hair into four to six sections, clipped up out of the way, and work through one section fully before moving to the next. Trying to detangle the whole head at once is what causes the comb to catch and pull.

Step 4: Hold the section above where you're combing. Anchor the hair with your free hand just above the spot you're detangling. This takes tension off the scalp and root, so any resistance from a knot doesn't pull at the hair follicle itself.

Step 5: Use slow, short strokes, not long dragging passes. Short strokes through a small section of hair let you feel a knot before you fight through it, and work it loose gradually rather than forcing the comb past resistance.

Step 6: Rinse the comb periodically. Product and shed hair build up in the teeth of a wide-tooth comb quickly on curly hair specifically, since more strands pass through per stroke. A quick rinse mid-detangle keeps the comb gliding rather than dragging on buildup.

Step 7: Finish with a leave-in before hair dries. Once fully detangled, a leave-in conditioner or curl cream applied while hair is still wet locks in the smoothness the comb just created, since curly hair tends to re-tangle somewhat as it air-dries without added slip.
